A man is fighting for his life in hospital after being viciously beaten for a cigarette.

Martin Brammall, 25, is in a coma facing brain damage.

He was punched to the ground and kicked in the head by youths after they asked him for a cigarette. He had told them he did not smoke.

Martin’s cousin Liz told Sky News he was enjoying a night out with friends.

“He went out on Friday night with two mates. He was just waiting for a taxi when a group came up and asked him for a cigarette,” she said.

“He didn’t have one. That’s what he said before he collapsed.

“Apparently there are witnesses and we just want them to come forward so we know how this happened.”

Liz has been comforting Martin’s girlfriend Mahjabeen Ansari who has spoken of her horror as Martin arrived home in a taxi covered in blood.

“He just deteriorated. I tried to wake him but he got agitated and shouted: ‘Get off me, leave me alone’.” she said.

Four men, aged between 20 and 26, have been arrested in connection with the attack, which happened near Stockport.
